It Started With One Truck… What Happened Next in Mhedwe Left Drivers With No Escape

What seemed like a minor incident quickly turned into a frightening chain of events in Mhedwe.

It all began when a trailer truck lost control while moving along the highway. The vehicle reportedly skidded across the tarmac before coming to a stop in the middle of the road. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this initial incident.

But that was only the beginning.

The stalled trailer blocked a significant portion of the highway, causing a traffic buildup. In response, the truck owners arranged for another trailer to transfer the goods from the damaged vehicle.

A Critical Step Missed

However, a critical step appears to have been missed.

As operations continued, no proper warning signs were placed along the Mbale–Mhedwe stretch to alert approaching drivers. At the same time, police officers at the scene were reportedly focused on securing the goods from the damaged trailer, leaving incoming traffic from the Kakamega–Kidumu direction without clear guidance.

The Second Impact

Moments later, another trailer approached.

The second truck, carrying animal feed, was descending towards the Mhedwe valley. Due to the heavy load, the driver was reportedly maintaining speed to gain enough momentum to climb the hill ahead — a common practice among truck drivers on that route.

But without any warning signs, the driver was caught off guard.

By the time he noticed the blocked road, it was too late to stop.

The trailer crashed into the stalled truck with force, before losing control, hitting a nearby Probox car, and eventually overturning by the roadside. The impact caused panic among nearby road users.

Aftermath and Response

The driver of the trailer managed to escape without injuries, while the driver of the Probox vehicle was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Recovery operations are currently underway as authorities work to tow the damaged trucks and clear the road.

Even as the situation is being handled, many are now questioning whether the accident could have been avoided — and whether proper safety measures were ignored at a critical moment.
