Accident in Manyatta Claims One Life, Residents Protest Over Road Safety
Residents of Manyatta woke up to a painful morning after a tragic road accident claimed a life along the busy Kisumu–Kakamega Highway.
The accident, which involved a lorry and a motorcycle, occurred near Manyatta area on the way to Mbale. According to eyewitnesses, the crash was severe, leaving one person confirmed dead at the scene. The identity of the victim has not yet been officially released.
This heartbreaking incident has once again raised serious concerns about safety along this stretch of the highway, which locals say has become a blackspot.
Residents Take to the Streets
In response to the tragedy, angry residents staged demonstrations early in the morning, blocking sections of the Majengo–Mbale road. The protests quickly spread to parts of the Kisumu–Kakamega highway, disrupting transport as residents demanded immediate action.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the demonstrators called on authorities to construct a speed bump near Manyatta Mosque — a spot they say has witnessed multiple accidents in a short period.
"This is not the first accident here. We are losing lives because nothing is being done," one resident lamented.
A Growing Safety Concern
Residents claim that two accidents have already occurred at the same location, making it clear that urgent intervention is needed. The absence of traffic calming measures such as bumps, clear signage, and proper road markings has made the area dangerous, especially for motorcyclists and pedestrians.
The situation highlights a wider issue affecting many roads across Kenya — where preventable accidents continue to claim lives due to lack of proper safety infrastructure.
Call to Action
This tragedy is not just about one life lost — it is a wake-up call. Authorities must act swiftly to:
- Install speed bumps and road signs near high-risk areas
- Enforce traffic rules strictly along busy highways
- Educate road users on safety, especially boda boda riders and drivers
Lives can be saved if the right measures are put in place.
As the community mourns, one message remains clear: no more lives should be lost in a place where action can make all the difference.
