What Happened
Ebunangwe Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Emuhaya, Vihiga County, is set to admit its pioneer students in September 2026 after key preparations were completed.

A stakeholder meeting held on Monday, August 17, 2026, brought together Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo, Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba, college officials and other stakeholders to assess the institution's readiness ahead of the September opening.

According to reports, the college now has a Principal and Deputy Principal, while the first group of trainers has also been deployed. Four trainers have reportedly already been posted as the institution moves towards full academic operations.

Official Response
Governor Ottichilo confirmed that admission of pioneer students would commence immediately, with the college expected to offer courses in engineering, ICT, building and construction, business and other areas aligned with market demands.

"The Principal has already been posted. The Board is in place and ready. We are now finalising infrastructure and admission plans," Governor Ottichilo said during the stakeholder meeting.

The development of Ebunangwe TVC has involved several levels of government. The Ministry of Education has been responsible for key infrastructure, while the Emuhaya NG-CDF and Vihiga County Government have been expected to support additional infrastructure requirements, including fencing, the gate and electricity.

Why This Matters
The opening of Ebunangwe TVC is expected to have an impact beyond education. The arrival of students and staff could create new economic opportunities for residents through accommodation, food businesses, transport, retail, printing, ICT services and other enterprises.

Key Facts – Ebunangwe TVC
  • Location: Emuhaya, Vihiga County
  • Opening: September 2026
  • Staff: Principal, Deputy Principal, 4 trainers deployed
  • Courses: Engineering, ICT, Building & Construction, Business
  • Support: Sigalagala National Polytechnic, Ministry of Education, NG-CDF, County Government
  • Hostel: 340-bed facility (26% complete)

The institution will also increase access to technical training for young people in Emuhaya and neighbouring areas, reducing the need for students to travel to distant towns and counties in search of vocational education.

Ebunangwe is expected to become the second technical training institution in Emuhaya, alongside Ebukanga Public Technical Institution.

Community Impact or Background Context
The institution has received technical support from Sigalagala National Polytechnic, which has played a role in its development and establishment.

According to records from Sigalagala National Polytechnic, the tuition block had a contract value of approximately KSh29.5 million, with the project later handed over after completion. The institution has also been involved in works relating to 12 lecture rooms and associated electrical and mechanical installations.

However, while the college is preparing to welcome its first students, not all planned facilities are complete. The planned 340-bed hostel, estimated to cost approximately KSh153 million, was recently reported to be at about 26 percent completion. This means some infrastructure development is expected to continue even after academic activities begin.

The project forms part of Kenya's broader efforts to expand technical and vocational education and equip young people with skills demanded by the labour market.

Safety & Prevention
As the college prepares to open, management should ensure that:

  • all buildings and facilities meet safety standards before students occupy them;
  • fire safety equipment and emergency exits are properly installed and marked;
  • students and staff are briefed on safety procedures during orientation;
  • ongoing construction work is cordoned off to prevent accidents;
  • security measures are in place to protect students and property.
Safety Checklist for TVET Institutions

  • Install and mark fire safety equipment and emergency exits.
  • Brief students and staff on safety procedures during orientation.

Prospective students and parents are advised to rely on official college, TVETA and KUCCPS announcements for confirmed information regarding specific courses, entry requirements, fees, reporting dates, admission procedures and accommodation.

What Happens Next
As of August 22, 2026, preparations for the September intake are at an advanced stage, with institutional leadership and initial trainers already in place.

The September opening will mark a major milestone for Emuhaya and Vihiga County, transforming Ebunangwe from a long-running infrastructure project into an operational centre for technical skills development.

The college is expected to begin admitting students after key preparations were completed, marking a major milestone in a project that has been under development for several years.

Further announcements regarding the official opening date, course offerings and admission procedures are expected from the college administration, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) and the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
