Vihiga's Biggest Hospital Just Got a Major Upgrade — What This Means Might Surprise You

For years, many residents in Vihiga County have had to travel long distances to Kisumu, Kakamega, or even Nairobi in search of specialized treatment. That reality may now be changing in a big way for communities across Mbale, Luanda, Hamisi, Sabatia, Emuhaya, Chavakali, Majengo, Kilingili and the wider Western Kenya region.

Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) has officially been elevated to a Level 5 hospital — a move that could reshape how healthcare is accessed not only in the county but across the wider Western Kenya region.

The decision follows a detailed assessment by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, which confirmed that the facility meets the standards required to offer advanced and specialized medical services.

What Does This Upgrade Really Mean for Ordinary Residents?

With the new Level 5 status, VTRH is now expected to operate as a major referral center. This means patients who previously had to be referred to distant hospitals may now receive treatment closer to home — potentially saving time, money, and even lives for residents of Vihiga County and neighboring areas.

The hospital is also set to expand its services significantly. Advanced diagnostic tools such as CT scans, X-rays, ultrasounds, and modern laboratory services are now part of its strengthened capacity. This could lead to faster and more accurate diagnoses for patients from Luanda, Hamisi, and Sabatia sub-counties.

Advanced Medical Services Now Available

In addition, specialized surgical procedures — including general and orthopedic surgeries — will be more accessible. Critical care services like Intensive Care Units (ICU) and High Dependency Units (HDU) are also part of the upgrade, offering better support for severe and emergency cases.

Beyond emergency care, the hospital is introducing specialized clinics for conditions such as cancer, kidney disease requiring dialysis, tuberculosis, and ENT and eye-related issues. Maternal and neonatal care is also expected to improve, especially for high-risk pregnancies and newborns in communities across Vihiga.

One of the most talked-about additions is the introduction of modern treatment options, including non-invasive laser procedures for certain conditions — a move that could reduce recovery time and improve patient outcomes for Vihiga residents.

"This is a historic step for our county. Our goal is to bring quality and specialized healthcare services closer to the people of Vihiga and the entire Western Kenya region," said Hospital CEO Titus Mumia.

Training Future Healthcare Professionals

The upgrade also positions the hospital as a teaching and internship center, meaning it will play a key role in training future healthcare professionals who will serve not just Vihiga, but the entire country.

While many residents from Mbale town, Luanda market area, Hamisi, and Sabatia have welcomed the news with optimism, some are already raising questions about whether the facility will have enough staff, equipment, and consistent support to fully deliver on its new mandate.

For now, one thing is clear — this change marks a turning point in Vihiga's healthcare journey, and its real impact will unfold in the months ahead as residents of Chavakali, Emuhaya, Kilingili, and surrounding areas begin to access these enhanced services.
