Labor Day Turns Sour in Vihiga as Homes Broken Into and Motorbikes and Electronics Stolen

Labor Day celebrations in Vihiga County turned sour as homes were broken into and motorbikes stolen

What was meant to be a day of rest, celebration, and unity in Vihiga County has now left behind a trail of frustration and loss.

As families gathered, music played, and communities marked Labour Day, not everyone was celebrating.

Some were watching. Waiting.

And when night fell, they made their move.

Reports emerging from different parts of Vihiga indicate that several homes were broken into during the night following the celebrations. For many residents, the joy of the day quickly turned into shock by morning.

In Amayi, a resident identified as Anguchi woke up to devastating news. His motorbike—a red Boxer 100, registration KMFR 287R—was gone. Along with it, a 32-inch Samsung TV had also been stolen from his home.

Elsewhere, in Ebutanyi, another victim—Mr. Festo—was attending Labour Day celebrations in Chavakali, unaware of what was happening back at home. By the time he returned, his motorbike, a Boxer 100 (KMDP 340P), had disappeared.

Two Different Homes. Same Night. Same Pattern.

While people were out celebrating, thieves reportedly took advantage of the moment—targeting homes they believed were unguarded.

And now, the mood across parts of Vihiga is shifting.

From celebration… to concern.

Residents are beginning to question their safety, especially during public holidays when many leave their homes unattended. The incidents have sparked conversations in local groups, with some urging neighbours to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.

"Mabeste, ukiona mulika mwizi," one message read—calling on the community to stay vigilant and expose those behind the thefts.

A Loss Beyond Property

For the victims, however, the damage is already done.

What was lost is not just property—but a sense of security.

A motorbike is not just a machine. It is transport to work. It is income. It is how a family puts food on the table. A television is not just entertainment—it is connection, information, and sometimes the only comfort after a long day.

And now, both are gone.

As investigations continue, the community waits for answers. Who is behind these thefts? Will the stolen items be recovered? And most importantly—will those responsible be brought to justice?

If you have any information about these incidents, contact the nearest police station or reach out to Vihiga Times.
