Community Meeting in Luanda Addresses Infrastructure Needs
Residents of Luanda town gathered at the community center last Saturday for a quarterly meeting focused on addressing the area's most pressing infrastructure challenges. The meeting, attended by over 200 residents and local leaders, provided a platform for community members to voice their concerns and propose solutions.
Among the top issues raised were the poor condition of several roads, inconsistent water supply, and the need for improved street lighting in residential areas. Community representatives presented a detailed report highlighting specific roads that require urgent repair, including the main access road to the market which has become nearly impassable during rainy seasons.
Road Repairs Top the Agenda
The condition of local roads dominated much of the discussion. Residents expressed frustration over the deteriorating state of several key routes, noting that the situation has been worsening over the past year. "Our vehicles are suffering, and it's becoming dangerous for pedestrians, especially children walking to school," said Mary Otieno, a resident of the Majengo area.
Local leaders acknowledged the concerns and provided updates on planned repair works. The county government has allocated funds for road maintenance in the current financial year, with work scheduled to begin next month. Priority will be given to roads serving schools, health facilities, and market areas.
Water Supply Challenges
Water supply was another major concern raised during the meeting. Several neighborhoods reported experiencing irregular water supply, with some areas going for days without running water. The local water company representative present at the meeting explained that the challenges were due to aging infrastructure and promised that rehabilitation works were underway.
"We understand the frustration of our residents, and we are working to address these issues systematically. The water infrastructure upgrade project will benefit over 5,000 households in the area."
Community Solutions
Beyond raising concerns, residents also proposed community-driven solutions. A neighborhood watch program was suggested to enhance security, while others proposed forming volunteer groups to assist with minor maintenance works in public spaces.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from both residents and leaders to work together in addressing the identified challenges. A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for three months to review progress on the action items.
