The weekly market day in Luanda was a vibrant celebration of agricultural abundance this past Wednesday, as farmers from across Vihiga County gathered to sell their produce. The market was overflowing with fresh vegetables, fruits, and grains, reflecting what local agricultural officers are calling one of the best harvest seasons in recent years.

Favorable weather conditions throughout the growing season, combined with improved farming techniques promoted by the county agricultural extension services, have contributed to the bumper harvest. Farmers reported yields up to 30% higher than the previous season for key crops like maize, beans, and vegetables.

Affordable Prices for Consumers

The abundance of produce has translated into lower prices for consumers, providing welcome relief for households struggling with the high cost of living. Tomatoes, which had been selling for up to 150 shillings per kilogram in previous months, were available for as low as 60 shillings. Similarly, prices for leafy greens, onions, and other staples have dropped significantly.

"This is the best time to buy fresh produce," said Grace Atieno, a regular market-goer. "The quality is excellent, and the prices are very friendly. I've been able to stock up on vegetables for the whole week at half what I used to spend."

Farmer Success Stories

Several farmers shared their success stories, crediting training programs and access to quality seeds and fertilizers for their improved yields. Peter Wekesa, who has been farming for over 20 years, said this season has been his best yet. "I attended the agricultural training organized by the county, and I learned new techniques that have really made a difference," he explained.

The county government has been working with agricultural organizations to provide farmers with training on modern farming techniques, pest management, and post-harvest handling. These efforts appear to be paying off, as evidenced by the quality and quantity of produce at the market.

Looking Ahead

While celebrating the current harvest, agricultural officers are already looking ahead to the next planting season. They are encouraging farmers to continue applying the lessons learned and to consider diversifying their crops to ensure food security and income stability throughout the year.

The market day will continue every Wednesday, with officials expecting the supply of fresh produce to remain strong in the coming weeks as more farmers harvest their crops.
