The ongoing rehabilitation of the Mbale Road has entered its third week, with construction crews working around the clock to complete the project on schedule. The road, which serves as a major artery connecting several neighborhoods to the town center, was closed to through traffic to allow for comprehensive repairs including resurfacing and drainage improvements.

The county infrastructure department has announced that the work is progressing well and remains on track for completion by the end of the month. However, motorists are advised to continue using alternative routes during the construction period.

Alternative Routes

Several detour routes have been established to help motorists navigate around the construction zone. The main alternative route uses Church Road and connects back to the highway via the Industrial Area. While this route adds approximately 10 minutes to the journey, it remains the most reliable option for through traffic.

For residents of the affected neighborhoods, local access is being maintained during off-peak hours. Construction crews are coordinating with community leaders to ensure that emergency vehicles and essential services can access the area at all times.

"We understand the inconvenience this closure causes, but the long-term benefits will be significant. This road has been in poor condition for years, and this comprehensive rehabilitation will serve the community for decades to come."

Project Scope

The rehabilitation project includes complete resurfacing of the 3-kilometer stretch, installation of proper drainage systems to prevent flooding during rainy seasons, and the addition of pedestrian walkways and street lighting. The project represents an investment of over 50 million shillings from the county infrastructure budget.

Once completed, the road will feature improved signage, designated bus stops, and improved intersections to enhance traffic flow and safety. The county has also announced plans for similar rehabilitation projects on other major roads in the area over the coming year.

Community Response

While the closure has caused some inconvenience, most residents have expressed support for the project. "The road was in terrible condition, so we welcome this work," said James Ochieng, a resident of the Mbale area. "A few weeks of inconvenience is worth it for a road that will last for years."

Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour signs and to exercise caution when using alternative routes, some of which pass through residential areas with narrow streets.
